"Since last year, the market for eggs has generally been declining. Affected by supply and demand factors, there was a brief, slight increase to around 4 yuan per kilogram during the Spring Festival this year, but after the festival, market demand sharply decreased, quickly falling back to around 3.5 yuan." Chen, the operator of a large egg-laying chicken farm in Anju Street, Rencheng District, told the reporter. "Currently, the wholesale price of eggs has fallen to around 2.22 yuan per kilogram, and the retail price on the market is only around 2.6 yuan, which is definitely an unprecedented low price!" Chen said that many egg-laying chicken farmers are currently in a situation of "holding on," and the low egg prices for more than a year, coupled with the increase in feed prices, has caused many farmers to consider leaving the market.
What other reasons are there for the sharp drop in egg prices? The reason behind this nationwide drop in egg prices is still the current oversupply in the egg market. "Since the end of the last avian influenza epidemic at the end of 2014, the egg market has been doing well, which has stimulated the enthusiasm of farmers. In 2016, the market clearly showed an oversupply, and egg prices naturally fell." Xu, a poultry farmer, said. According to past experience, as the temperature gradually warms up, egg-laying chickens will enter their peak egg-laying period, and it is expected that egg prices will remain stable and decline in the short term. However, Xu also revealed another concern: because the current egg ex-factory price is already at an ultra-low level, there is limited room for further decline. Therefore, overall, the possibility of egg prices remaining low in the future is relatively high.
According to health experts, although egg prices are affordable now, citizens should not overeat them. Eggs are high-protein foods, and eating too many can lead to an increase in metabolic products and increase the burden on the kidneys. Generally speaking, children and the elderly should eat one egg a day, and teenagers and adults should eat two eggs a day.
